The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo in the Ashanti Region, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has publicly called on former President John Dramani Mahama to condemn what he describes as the misuse of Ghana’s Independence Square by two foreign nationals to promote homosexuality.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, June 26, the MP revealed that he had formally petitioned President Mahama on the matter, expressing outrage over a viral video showing two foreign men, alleged to be gay, kissing and appearing to celebrate a wedding ceremony at the iconic national site.

The video, which also features the Ghanaian flag prominently displayed in the background, has stirred widespread public outcry and reignited debate over LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana.

Mr. Assafuah, who is also a lawyer, argued that the act was not merely a private celebration but a symbolic affront to Ghana’s cultural values and national identity. “This is not just a social issue, it is a moral assault and a spiritual insult to the conscience of our nation,” he stated in his petition.

He further described the photographs taken at both the Independence Square and the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum as deeply offensive, asserting that these sites represent “not only our freedom, but our national pride and the sacrifices of our forefathers.”

The MP urged President Mahama to not only condemn the act publicly but also to support and ensure the urgent passage of Ghana’s anti-gay bill, which is currently before Parliament. According to Mr. Assafuah, such legislation is necessary to prevent similar incidents and to uphold what he called the “moral integrity” of Ghanaian society.
