The New Patriotic Party (NPP) together with other political parties, are set to stage a a nationwide demonstration scheduled for Monday, May 5, in response to the recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Describing the move as a threat to Ghana’s democratic foundations, the parties say the protest will defend the constitution and safeguard the independence of the judiciary. The decision was announced following an emergency meeting held on Thursday, April 24, 2025.

The planned protest has gained the support of several other parties, including the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), among others.

Chief Justice Torkornoo was suspended by President John Dramani Mahama on April 22 after a prima facie case was established against her based on three petitions. The suspension, which falls under Article 146(6) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, followed consultations with the Council of State. A five-member committee has since been formed to investigate the allegations.

In a joint statement issued on Friday, April 25, the political parties voiced strong opposition to the suspension, calling it “a direct assault on judicial independence.”

“The blatant disregard for the rule of law is not merely a political matter but rather an assault on the very soul of our democracy,” the statement emphasized.

The coalition further accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of systematically undermining the judiciary. They cited historical precedents, including what they described as a “failed plot in 2010” by the NDC to remove Ghana’s first female Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood.

“The disturbing trend of judicial intimidation by the NDC is not new. The pattern is undeniable,” the group asserted.

The demonstration aims to draw national attention to what the coalition perceives as a mounting threat to Ghana’s rule of law and democratic integrity.
