NDC and NPP MPs occupy Majority side of Parliament, awaiting commencement of sitting

In a dramatic turn of events, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP)  caucus in Parliament , have both occupied the majority side of the Speaker ahead of Parliamentary sitting today.

The area occupied is  typically reserved for the Majority,  thus the NPP, who until a declaration made by the Speaker to declared four seats vacant, gives the NDC the majority status in Parliament. This unprecedented move heightened the ongoing power tussle between the opposition NDC and the governing NPP as both sides contest the balance of power in the Chamber.

The situation stems from a recent declaration by Speaker Alban Bagbin on October 17, which left four parliamentary seats vacant, effectively tipping the numerical advantage to the NDC.

The ruling increased the NDC’s seat count to 136, while the NPP was reduced to 135, altering the composition of the House. The disputed seats include two held by the NPP, one by the NDC, and one by an independent MP.

Reacting swiftly, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin filed an appeal with the Supreme Court, leading to a stay of execution on the Speaker’s declaration. The court’s intervention has allowed the affected MPs to retain their seats for now, keeping the status quo in place until a final decision is reached.

As a result, the struggle for control has only intensified, with both parties digging in for what appears to be a prolonged standoff.
