The National Communications Authority (NCA) has responded to rising public concerns, particularly on social media, regarding high internet data pricing and the recent classification of MTN as a Significant Market Power (SMP).

This classification has sparked widespread debate among consumers.
The NCA, as the regulatory body for the communications sector, emphasizes its mandate to maintain fair competition and protect consumer interests in the telecommunications industry.

The designation of MTN as an SMP is part of the NCA’s broader mission to foster a balanced market environment.
The authority clarifies that the SMP classification is not intended to penalize MTN but to ensure a competitive landscape that benefits consumers.

Measures such as asymmetric interconnection rates, tariff parity, and technology neutrality are being implemented to encourage competition, innovation, and fair pricing.

These initiatives are designed to empower other operators to compete effectively, ensuring better pricing and improved service quality for consumers.

Supporting its stance, the NCA cited a recent report from cable.co.uk, which ranked Ghana third in Africa and second in the West African region for offering some of the lowest mobile internet data costs.

This report was part of a regular Billing Monitoring exercise reviewed by the NCA.
The NCA reassures consumers that it remains committed to collaborating with all relevant stakeholders to guarantee reliable internet access and uphold consumer rights.
