Former President and presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has raised concerns over the controversial ‘Agyapadie’ document, which has been a focal point of political discourse in the lead-up to Ghana’s 2024 general elections.
Speaking to a gathering in Widana, Pusiga Constituency, Mahama questioned the authenticity claims surrounding the document, which is alleged to outline a plan by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to consolidate state assets.
“Now, they say the Agyapadie document is fake. Let’s assume it is fake, so how come all the things mentioned in that book are being implemented?” Mahama asked, implying that the NPP might be enacting policies that align with the contents of the disputed document.
This statement follows recent comments by President Akufo-Addo, who, during The Ghana Report Summit in Accra on August 1, 2024, dismissed the ‘Agyapadie’ document as a fabricated piece of propaganda aimed at discrediting his administration.
The President recounted previous instances where he had been the target of various false accusations throughout his political career, including allegations of drug trafficking and rumors intended to question his health and suitability for the presidency.
He framed the current controversy as part of a pattern of politically motivated attacks by his opponents.
However, Mahama remains unconvinced, challenging the dismissive stance of the President.
“These people think the country is their inheritance, and they are bequeathing what is for all of us to themselves,” he stated, accusing the ruling party of monopolizing the nation’s resources for personal gain.
The debate over the ‘Agyapadie’ document has further polarized the political landscape in Ghana, with both sides using it to rally their respective bases as the country heads towards a highly anticipated election in December 2024.
As tensions rise, the document continues to be a contentious point, with both parties leveraging its narrative to either defend or criticize the governance and ethical conduct of their opponents.
