Jannik Sinner capped off an incredible 2024 season by playing a pivotal role in Italy’s successful defense of their Davis Cup title.
The world number one continued his dominant form, defeating Tallon Griekspoor 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 to seal a 2-0 victory over the Netherlands in the final match of the competition.
Earlier in the day, Matteo Berrettini gave Italy an early lead, overcoming Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-2.
The Italian team’s triumph in Malaga was part of a historic week for Italian tennis, as the women’s team also claimed the Billie Jean King Cup title just days earlier.
Sinner, reflecting on the victory, said, “We are very happy to be back here holding this trophy. It feels like we are in Italy.
You feel a different pressure and weight carrying Italy on your shoulders, but I think we handled it really well. If it wasn’t important, I wouldn’t be here. This means so much to me.”
The Davis Cup victory caps a remarkable year for Sinner, who claimed his first two Grand Slam titles in 2024, winning the Australian Open in January and the US Open in September.
The 23-year-old also triumphed at the season-ending ATP Finals earlier this month. With only six losses in 76 ATP Tour matches over the past year, Sinner’s dominance has firmly established him as one of the sport’s top players.
