The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a statutory public holiday in observance of Workers’ Day.
In a statement, the Minister urged the general public to recognise and observe the day nationwide in line with its official status.
He noted that May 1 is set aside annually to honour the contributions of workers and to commemorate the global labour movement.
“Friday, 1st May 2026 marks Workers’ Day (May Day), which is a statutory public holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement said.
Also known as International Workers’ Day, May Day is marked worldwide with activities that celebrate workers’ rights, achievements, and the history of labour organisation.
Each year, workers across the globe use the occasion to reflect on progress made and to highlight ongoing efforts toward improved working conditions and fair labour practices.
