Ghana Premier League side Dreams FC has addressed the controversy surrounding their 1-0 victory over Accra Lions in matchweek 16, following concerns raised by the latter regarding the officiating of the match.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 7, the club clarified its position on the allegations of unfair refereeing. The match, which took place at the Tuba Astro Turf, saw Dreams FC come out on top, but Accra Lions have since expressed doubts about the integrity of the match officials’ decisions.
Dreams FC acknowledged the unavoidable nature of refereeing errors in football, emphasizing the human aspect of officiating that is present across the globe. The club stressed that both positive and negative refereeing decisions are part of the sport, and it is essential for all stakeholders to accept this reality.
“Football clubs all over the world have and will continue to benefit and suffer from refereeing infractions. As industry players, it is our responsibility to recognize this due to the inherent human nature of officiating,” the club stated. “This remains true even in jurisdictions that have made significant investments in modern technology to improve officiating.”
Additionally, Dreams FC pointed out that there are established systems in place to hold referees accountable, with those found guilty of misconduct facing appropriate disciplinary action.
The club also expressed its disapproval of efforts to use Dreams FC as a scapegoat for personal or organizational agendas, reinforcing their commitment to fair play and the integrity of their performance. While defending their own actions, Dreams FC acknowledged the complexities surrounding refereeing decisions in the Ghana Premier League.
This statement adds to the ongoing debate about the quality of officiating in the league and the need for continuous improvement in football governance.
In a related development, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has charged Accra Lions FC for their comments regarding match officials, which were shared on social media following their defeat to Dreams FC.
