Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has extended his support to traders affected by the recent fire outbreak at Kantamanto Market, donating GH¢200,000 to assist in their recovery efforts.
During a visit to the site, Dr. Bawumia toured the devastated market, engaging with traders who suffered significant losses due to the inferno, which destroyed stalls and goods, leaving many in financial distress.
Addressing the victims, the Vice President expressed his heartfelt sadness and assured them of the government’s commitment to rebuilding the market and preventing similar incidents in the future.
“We will investigate the incident to determine the cause of the fire. Coming here, I have seen that work has commenced, and I am happy about that. With the little help we can offer, we will contribute to ensuring that the market becomes a befitting one,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia also outlined plans to enhance security and surveillance at the market, proposing the installation of CCTV cameras and the establishment of an internal security team.
“When we finish the market, I want to propose we establish internal security. Apart from that, I will personally ensure that CCTV cameras are installed to enhance security around the market. Even though we are leaving office soon, I will see to it that this is done,” he stated.
Accompanied by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Titus Glover, and leaders of the Kantamanto Market, Dr. Bawumia reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the traders and helping them rebuild their livelihoods.
The Vice President’s gesture has been widely praised as a timely intervention to alleviate the plight of the affected traders while setting a foundation for improved market infrastructure and security.
