The Swiss Ambassador to Ghana Simone Petra Giger has commended Ghana for its strong democratic credentials, describing the country’s political culture as one worthy of pride and protection.
Speaking in an interview with MX24 News, the ambassador said she deeply admires Ghana’s democratic system, particularly the peaceful conduct of elections. She revealed that she was present in the country during the 2024 Ghanaian general election and had the opportunity to observe the process.
According to her, the atmosphere during the elections reflected a strong democratic spirit among citizens.
“I admire the democracy you have in Ghana. I was here to observe the last elections in 2024 and saw how peaceful it was. You could really see this vibe in the democracy,” she said.
She encouraged Ghanaians to remain committed to protecting their democratic values, stressing that the country’s peaceful political environment makes it stand out globally.
The ambassador also highlighted Ghana’s cultural and geographic diversity as one of its greatest strengths, noting that many citizens may not fully appreciate how rich and varied the country is.
She urged Ghanaians to explore more parts of the country beyond major urban centres such as Accra, Kumasi, Tamale and Sekondi-Takoradi in order to better appreciate the country’s cultural diversity.
According to her, travelling across Ghana offers a unique opportunity to experience the country’s many cultures and traditions.
She further encouraged citizens to embrace and celebrate the country’s diversity, describing Ghana as a “multifaceted, diverse and vibrant” nation whose unity despite its differences is admirable.
Her remarks come as Ghana continues to earn international recognition for maintaining relative political stability and peaceful electoral transitions since the return to constitutional rule under the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
