The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ruled in favor of defender Francis Adjetey in his contract dispute against Accra Hearts of Oak and the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
The verdict, delivered on February 26, 2025, overturns an earlier decision by the GFA Appeals Committee on February 26, 2024.
As a result of the ruling, Hearts of Oak must pay Adjetey GHC 106,477.42 for wrongfully terminating his contract. Additionally, the club is required to pay an annual interest of 5% on the amount, effective from September 15, 2023, until full payment is made.
The CAS decision also holds both Hearts of Oak and the GFA jointly responsible for covering CHF 1,000 in legal expenses incurred by the player. This ruling highlights the importance of clubs and football associations upholding contractual commitments and ensuring fair treatment of players.
Adjetey initially signed a four-year contract with the club in 2023 but left due to a dispute over unmet contractual obligations.
The CAS judgment reinforces the significance of arbitration in resolving football disputes and sets a precedent for similar cases in the future.
