With anticipation building for the 2025 Unity Cup in London, the Black Stars of Ghana are facing a major setback even before the first whistle blows.

The team’s Management Committee Chairman, Dr. Randy Abbey, has confirmed that several top players may be unavailable for the high-profile tournament.

Ghana is set to lock horns with arch-rivals Nigeria in a semifinal showdown on May 28 at the Gtech Community Stadium. The winner will move on to face either Jamaica or Trinidad and Tobago in the final on May 31. But the road ahead may be rockier than expected.

“There are quite a number of players who are injured,” Dr. Abbey said in an interview with 3Sports. “There are a few players who are also engaged in qualifying games for Europe, and so their clubs won’t release them. Mind you, this period is outside the FIFA free period.”

This means that the team could be without key players due to injuries and ongoing league duties, particularly for those involved in promotion playoffs or battling for European qualification spots. The timing of the Unity Cup, falling outside FIFA’s official international window, complicates player availability.

Despite these challenges, preparations are moving forward. The Black Stars will open camp in Accra on Sunday, May 25, where Coach Otto Addo is expected to begin shaping a squad with the available talent.

Beyond the Unity Cup, Ghana is eyeing the long game. The tournament will serve as a key part of the team’s build-up to their crucial 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Chad and Mali in September.

With pride, rivalry, and preparation all on the line, the Unity Cup may test the depth of Ghana’s squad and their ability to adapt under pressure.
