Antoine Semenyo has expressed relief after breaking his international goal drought in Ghana’s commanding 5-0 victory over Chad in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The Bournemouth forward netted the first goal of the game in the second minute of the game for the Black Stars, ending a frustrating spell without an international goal since March 2023. His last strike had been a dramatic winner against Angola in Kumasi, but he struggled to find the back of the net in subsequent matches.
“It’s a confidence boost, for sure,” Semenyo said. “Every player goes through phases where they don’t score, but I knew it would come. I just had to keep approaching each game the same way, and thankfully, I got my goal this time.”
Ghana’s emphatic win propelled them to the top of Group I, a crucial step toward their dream of qualifying for a fifth World Cup. The Black Stars took full control from the start, with five different players getting on the scoresheet in a dominant display.
Reflecting on the result, Semenyo highlighted the team’s determination to bounce back after a disappointing AFCON campaign. “We wanted to win big and claim first place in the group,” he said. “The 5-0 is great, but Monday’s game is even more important.”
With Ghana set to face Madagascar next, Semenyo and his teammates will be eager to build on their momentum and edge closer to World Cup qualification.
