The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, has commenced a decongestion campaign aimed at clearing unauthorized structures and street activities in key parts of the capital.

The exercise began today, Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

Initial efforts will focus on areas surrounding the AMA Head Office. Specific routes include Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square extending to Adabraka. The operation is expected to intensify along corridors such as Wato Junction through King Tackie Tawiah School to Cow Lane.

According to AMA Public Relations Officer Gilbert Ankrah, the objective is to reclaim public space and ensure free movement for both vehicles and pedestrians. “The exercise is concentrated around the AMA Head Office, but we’ll also pay attention to high-traffic areas like the Accra City Hotel and Mövenpick Hotel,” he explained.

In preparation, AMA Chief Executive Michael Kpakpo Allotey engaged with traders and hawkers in the Central Business District (CBD), urging their cooperation and understanding.

“As we begin this cleanup effort, I ask for your support. We all desire a cleaner, more orderly city, and this can only happen if we work together,” he told the vendors.

He also assured them of future opportunities under the government’s proposed 24-hour economy policy, which is expected to provide alternative avenues for trading. “The upcoming 24-hour economy will open up new spaces and times for you to do business. But for now, I ask that we respect the rules and avoid trading on the pavements,” he added.

The decongestion drive forms part of a larger initiative by city authorities to enhance sanitation and restore discipline within Accra’s urban landscape.
