Travis Obeng-Casper, the creative mind behind the fashion brand Ajabeng, shared his innovative approach to fabric selection and design on an episode of Fashion Wednesday. Hosted by Diana Edinam Kumbey, the conversation shed light on how Ajabeng is blending sustainability, simplicity, and tradition to redefine Ghanaian fashion.
“When you look at the Ghanaian context of fashion, we think a lot about prints. And I don’t do well with a lot of colours. I am very toned down,” Travis explained. “In terms of fabric, I am very interested in textured fabrics. Even if it’s plain, I like the feel of it. Even if you’re far away and you see it, you can tell the fabric is a cool one.”
Ajabeng’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its use of biodegradable fabrics like wool, wool blends, cotton, and cotton blends. However, Travis is also focused on celebrating Ghana’s heritage by reimagining traditional handwoven fabrics. “One of the things the brand has been exploring is getting back to our heritage. We’ve tried to create a hybrid Ghanaian textile, like blending kente, fugu, and kete fabric from the Volta Region,” he shared. “For me, it’s more about how best we can bring all of these techniques together and create a hybrid fabric. Also, find a modern way to represent it. So having a softer feel, a lighter feel, and keeping the durability because it’s very important.”
The ultimate goal of Ajabeng is to add value to Ghanaian handwoven textiles by integrating them into everyday wear. Travis envisions a future where these fabrics are not limited to traditional outfits. “If it is just the wrap, or the kaba and slit, or even gowns, it’s not enough. How do we use it for our everyday wear? If you’re going to the office, you can have a handwoven pant. Same as the shirt. That has been the goal. The core of the brand is to use and celebrate our local textiles,” he emphasized.
Ajabeng’s innovative approach serves as a testament to the potential of blending modern design with traditional craftsmanship, offering a fresh perspective on Ghanaian fashion.
