Diana Edinam Kumbey, host of MX24’s “Fashion Wednesday,” sat down with Stephanie Adu-Mudikongo, the founder of Colorbox Cosmetics, to discuss the brand’s unique approach to beauty and entrepreneurship on the show.
When asked about what sets Colorbox Cosmetics apart, Adu-Mudikongo emphasized two key factors. “It is really difficult to stand out in this day and age,” she admitted. “We really care about our branding. What it looks like, what it makes you feel. Is it cohesive all together? From the start to the finish.” She also highlighted the brand’s community-focused marketing approach, stating, “We are really engaging, and we love to build a community where it’s safe. You can really be yourself.”
Reflecting on the challenges of running a beauty brand for nine years, Adu-Mudikongo candidly shared her top three obstacles. Inflation topped the list, with the impact of currency fluctuations being particularly challenging for an importing nation. “We cannot avoid it,” she explained, “and we have to carefully consider how that translates into our prices and how we engage with our customers.”
Personal growth has been another significant challenge. “Training myself to be the leader that can take a company to be Ghana’s number 1 brand has been a journey,” she revealed. Employee management rounded out her top challenges, a struggle she believes is universal among Ghanaian businesses.
Her approach to overcoming these obstacles is straightforward: “Planning, planning, planning!” She emphasized the importance of communication, both with customers and team members. “Communicating what is happening and why it’s happening” has been crucial to her success.
