NPP bans early campaign ahead of Parliamentary primaries

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has directed all members seeking to contest its parliamentary primaries to halt campaign activities until the party releases its official guidelines for the process.

The directive, which also applies to aspirants’ agents and supporters, follows complaints that some prospective candidates have already begun soliciting support in their constituencies.

In a statement dated October 11 and signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party said the activities contravene its internal regulations and Code of Conduct, with the potential to compromise fairness and party cohesion.

As part of the restrictions, aspirants are not permitted to erect campaign billboards, posters or banners, organise rallies, tour constituencies or meet polling station executives to canvass for votes.

The ban also covers the distribution of gifts and other incentives to delegates, paid media promotions and sponsored social media campaigns.

The party has further cautioned its officers at the polling station, electoral area, constituency, regional and national levels, alongside TESCON members, against endorsing aspirants on social media or supporting any premature campaign.

It warned that anyone who disregards the directive could face disciplinary action, including sanctions that may jeopardise their participation in the parliamentary primaries.

The NPP says it will communicate the timetable and rules governing the primaries in due course.

Constituency and regional executives have been instructed to ensure compliance, as the party urges members to respect the directive.
