Erling Haaland scored twice. Manchester City beat Porto 2-0. The win started their Champions League campaign on a solid note.

City controlled the first half. Haaland missed two big chances. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved both. Costa also stopped Rayan Cherki on the rebound.

Haaland made up for it early in the second half. He nodded in an Enzo Fernandez cross. The ball went in off the post. Porto grew in confidence after that. Alan Varela curled a shot just wide. Gianluigi Donnarumma nearly lost the ball to William Gomes.

Haaland sealed it late. He tucked home a Rayan Ait-Nouri cutback in stoppage time. City became the first team to beat Porto at the Estadio do Dragao this year.

Haaland spoke after the match. “I hope so, we win away in a difficult game. Look at this atmosphere, it was unreal at times.” He added that City controlled the first half and created many chances. “These are the games we have to win.”

Coach Enzo Maresca was pleased. “We could have scored more goals, especially in the first half. But overall we deserved to win the game.” He said it was normal for Porto to create some moments at home.

City have won their first three Premier League games this season. Haaland now has 36 Champions League goals in 40 games for the club. Porto had no shots on target. The result gives City a positive start under Maresca.
