Arsenal sent a powerful message before the new Premier League season with a 3-0 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield. The champions were sharp, aggressive and clinical, while City’s first competitive match under Enzo Maresca exposed some early problems.
The warning came almost instantly. After just 23 seconds, Myles Lewis-Skelly found Riccardo Calafiori, who calmly fired past Gianluigi Donnarumma to put Arsenal ahead.
City struggled to settle after the early blow. Arsenal pressed with purpose and used their physical strength well, while Martin Odegaard and Christos Tzolis caused constant problems on the left.
The second goal arrived in the 28th minute. Tzolis headed Odegaard’s cross back across the area, allowing Kai Havertz to send a downward header beyond Donnarumma.
Tzolis then created another opening soon after half-time. The £34m summer signing slipped the ball to Odegaard, who produced a clever dummy to send Donnarumma the wrong way before finishing into an empty net.
For Arsenal, the performance was more than a trophy win. It was proof that Mikel Arteta’s side have the quality and confidence to defend their Premier League crown.
Tzolis was one of the biggest positives. The Greek forward provided two assists and looked dangerous throughout, showing why Arsenal moved for him after he helped produce 40 goals for Club Brugge last season.
At the other end, Arsenal’s defence also stood firm. David Raya made important saves from Phil Foden and Antoine Semenyo, while Lewis-Skelly and Ben White helped protect the lead during City’s best spells.
For Maresca, however, the night was a painful introduction to life after Pep Guardiola. City rarely found the control that defined Guardiola’s era, while Erling Haaland was withdrawn after 53 minutes.
The defeat was City’s biggest in the Community Shield since Arsenal also beat them 3-0 in 2014. It also showed why Maresca may need time to find the right balance in a team entering a new chapter.
Arsenal now head into their title defence with momentum. They have won their second trophy in four months, and the Gunners look ready to turn the Community Shield into a launchpad for something bigger.
