Street Fighter has opened at number one at the North American box office, taking an estimated US$31 million over the October 16–18 weekend.

The live-action adaptation of Capcom’s fighting-game franchise led the latest cinema rankings, according to figures reported by UPI and box-office tracker The Numbers. The Numbers lists the film as playing in 3,575 cinemas across the domestic market.

Its opening put it ahead of You Can See Everything, which earned US$15 million, while Other Mommy placed third with US$8.4 million. Whalefall followed with US$8 million and Sense and Sensibility completed the top five with US$7.3 million, UPI reported on October 18.

Directed by Kitao Sakurai, Street Fighter stars Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken Masters and Callina Liang as Chun-Li. The cast also includes Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog, Jason Momoa as Blanka and Roman Reigns as Akuma.

Paramount’s official synopsis places the story in 1993, with Ryu and Ken drawn back into combat after Chun-Li recruits them for the World Warrior Tournament. A conspiracy behind the competition raises the stakes beyond the fighting arena.

The film’s theatrical opening follows months of promotion built around bringing the franchise’s recognisable characters and signature combat moves to a live-action audience. Paramount released the official trailer in April ahead of the October 16 cinema launch.

The reported US$31 million figure covers the North American opening weekend, not worldwide earnings or profit. The film’s performance over the coming weeks will show how much of its initial audience interest carries beyond the opening rush.
