The Ministry of the Interior has announced a curfew on Bawku in Ghana’s Upper East Region, effective from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily, starting Monday, October 28, 2024.

This measure comes in response to renewed and deadly clashes tied to an ongoing chieftaincy dispute.

The decision followed an emergency session of the National Security Council, chaired by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The unrest intensified after the return from exile of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre, whose presence has reportedly escalated tensions.

The recent violence has claimed at least eight lives and left several injured, including victims of an ambush on travelers in the area.

In a statement on Monday, the Ministry of the Interior highlighted Abagre’s continued presence as a severe threat to public peace and security, prompting the curfew directive. Residents are urged to comply fully with the curfew and cooperate with security agencies as they work to restore calm.

Security forces have been mobilized to strictly enforce the curfew, with the ministry warning that violations will result in legal consequences. The government’s priority remains restoring stability in Bawku and curbing further violence in the region.
