England’s World Cup campaign began with excitement, goals and plenty of drama as Thomas Tuchel’s side defeated Croatia 4-2 in a thrilling Group L opener in Dallas. Harry Kane struck twice, Jude Bellingham dazzled, and Marcus Rashford applied the finishing touch as the Three Lions survived a series of defensive scares to claim a vital three points.

The atmosphere inside Dallas Stadium felt like a knockout match rather than a group-stage opener. England supporters arrived with high expectations for the start of a new era under Tuchel, and while the performance was far from flawless, it offered plenty of reasons for optimism.

England started brightly and took the lead after Luka Modric brought down Noni Madueke inside the area. Kane saw his first penalty saved by Dominik Livakovic, but after the Croatian goalkeeper was judged to have moved off his line, the England captain made no mistake with the retake.

Croatia responded like the seasoned tournament side they have been for much of the last decade. Martin Baturina produced a stunning finish to level the match before Kane restored England’s advantage with a towering header from Declan Rice’s corner.

Yet England’s defensive uncertainty remained a concern. Croatia punished a passive moment just before half-time when Petar Musa converted after clever work from Ivan Perisic, leaving the teams level at the break despite England’s attacking dominance.

Tuchel was delighted with what followed.

“I loved the second half. All of it. I loved the reaction to a very complicated first half,” the England manager said.

His players responded immediately. Just moments after the restart, Bellingham surged forward onto Elliot Anderson’s pass before drilling his finish beyond Livakovic. It was the type of decisive contribution that justified Tuchel’s faith in the Real Madrid midfielder.

England never looked back. They pressed higher, attacked with greater conviction and repeatedly tested Livakovic, who produced a string of outstanding saves to keep Croatia alive.

“We encouraged them to go for it, to play with more courage, be brave and be ourselves,” Tuchel explained. “We created a lot of chances. We had a lot of ball wins. We scored goals.”

The statistics reflected England’s superiority. They registered 22 shots and generated an expected goals figure of 2.8, overwhelming a Croatia side that struggled to contain their energy after the interval.

Rashford eventually sealed victory five minutes from time after combining brilliantly with substitute Bukayo Saka. His composed finish sparked celebrations among England fans who sensed this could be an important early statement.

“Overall I think we deserved to win,” Tuchel said. “There are still things to improve. You need to grow into a tournament.”

England now turn their attention to Ghana, knowing sharper defending is required. But if their attacking display in Dallas is any indication, Tuchel’s side possess the firepower to make a serious impact at this World Cup.
