Saudi Arabia came within touching distance of another famous World Cup opening victory, but Maxi Araujo struck late to rescue a 1-1 draw for Uruguay in a dramatic Group H encounter. In a match filled with tension, resilience and goalkeeping heroics, Mohammed Al-Owais almost inspired another Saudi upset before Uruguay’s relentless pressure finally paid off.

For much of the game, memories of Saudi Arabia’s stunning victory over Argentina at the 2022 World Cup hovered over the stadium. The Green Falcons once again frustrated a heavyweight opponent and looked set to begin another campaign with a statement result.

Saudi Arabia took the lead four minutes before half-time. Hassan Al-Tambakti’s powerful header from a corner was pushed away by veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, but Abdulelah Al-Amri reacted quickest to turn home the rebound and send Saudi fans into celebration.

The goal transformed the atmosphere. Uruguay suddenly looked rattled, while Saudi Arabia defended with growing confidence and discipline. Marcelo Bielsa’s side dominated possession but struggled to create clear openings during a frustrating first half.

Recognising the need for change, Bielsa acted decisively at the break. Among the players withdrawn was Darwin Nunez, whose difficult season continued with another quiet display.

The former Liverpool striker managed just eight touches before being replaced. Uruguay immediately looked sharper, quicker and more aggressive in attack as fresh legs injected life into their forward play.

Wave after wave of pressure followed. Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte came closest when his low drive was brilliantly tipped onto the post by Al-Owais, who was rapidly becoming the game’s central figure.

The Saudi goalkeeper produced save after save to keep his side ahead. His positioning, reactions and composure frustrated Uruguay, who finished with 28 attempts on goal but repeatedly found Al-Owais standing in their way.

Yet even his outstanding display could not prevent the equaliser. Ten minutes from time, Federico Vinas’ header was parried by Al-Owais, but only as far as Maxi Araujo, who calmly converted from close range.

Uruguay pushed hard for a winner as the heat and intensity began to take their toll on Saudi Arabia. Al-Owais delivered one final moment of brilliance in stoppage time, diving low to push Federico Valverde’s fierce strike around the post.

The draw leaves Group H finely balanced after Cape Verde’s surprise result against Spain. Saudi Arabia will take confidence from a performance full of courage and organization, while Uruguay know improvement is needed if they are to progress deep into the tournament.
