The government has unveiled a special assistance package for Ghanaian citizens expected to return home following their evacuation from South Africa, where recent xenophobic attacks have raised serious safety concerns.

The initiative was announced by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who explained that the measures are intended to support the smooth reintegration and welfare of returnees upon arrival in Ghana.

He noted that the package includes a “Welcome Home Financial Package,” transport arrangements to help evacuees travel to their respective destinations across the country, as well as a reintegration allowance to aid their resettlement.

The minister further stated that affected individuals will have access to free psychosocial support services to help them deal with trauma and emotional distress resulting from the attacks and displacement.

Additionally, the returnees will be enrolled in a special database aimed at connecting them with job opportunities and possible start-up support to help them rebuild their livelihoods.

The move comes in response to renewed xenophobic violence in parts of South Africa, which has heightened concerns for the safety of foreign nationals, including Ghanaians living there.

Government officials say the intervention is part of broader efforts to ensure the safe return and reintegration of affected citizens while reaffirming the state’s commitment to their welfare.

“We value and cherish all our citizens,” the minister said.

The evacuation efforts are ongoing alongside intensified diplomatic engagements aimed at ensuring the protection of Ghanaians residing in South Africa.
