President Bola Tinubu has secured the presidential nomination of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the country’s 2027 general elections.

Results released on Sunday, May 24, showed that Tinubu overwhelmingly defeated challenger Stanley Osifo during the party’s presidential primaries held on Saturday.

According to the results, the Nigerian president polled nearly 11 million votes, while Osifo secured about 16,500 votes.

Tinubu is now expected to seek a second and final four-year term in office when Nigerians head to the polls in January 2027.

Since assuming office in 2023, Tinubu’s administration has introduced major economic reforms, including the removal of fuel and electricity subsidies, the easing of foreign exchange controls and reforms to Nigeria’s tax system.

The reforms have drawn praise from some foreign investors and international financial observers, although they have also triggered domestic concerns over rising living costs and economic hardship.

The president’s re-election prospects were further boosted after attempts by opposition parties to form a united front and present a single candidate reportedly collapsed earlier this month.

Tinubu won the 2023 presidential election against two main opposition candidates, who later challenged the results in court over allegations of electoral irregularities. However, the courts upheld his victory, while Tinubu maintained that the election was conducted fairly.
