President John Dramani Mahama has announced that African passport holders travelling to Ghana for business or tourism will no longer pay visa fees under the country’s newly introduced electronic visa system.

The announcement was made on Monday, May 25, during the official launch of Ghana’s new e-visa platform, which forms part of efforts to modernise the country’s immigration and travel processes.

According to President Mahama, the new policy takes immediate effect and is intended to promote easier movement across the continent while improving travel convenience for visitors.

“Effective today, all holders of African passports travelling to Ghana for business or tourism will apply for visas via the new online e-visa platform, and they will pay no visa fee,” he stated.

The President explained that the digital visa system would allow travellers from around the world to complete visa applications online without the need to physically visit Ghanaian embassies or consulates.

Under the new system, applicants will be able to upload supporting documents electronically, make secure digital payments and receive travel authorisation through email or mobile devices.

“The electronic visa system, or e-visa, will allow travellers from all around the world to apply for visas online. They would upload the supporting documents electronically, make their secure digital payments, and receive travel authorisation in their emails or on their phones,” he said.

President Mahama noted that the initiative is part of broader government efforts to improve service delivery, strengthen Ghana’s attractiveness for tourism and investment, and position the country as a leading destination for business and continental integration.
