The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has denounced a wave of violent attacks in Mali, calling for intensified regional efforts to confront terrorism in the sub-region.

The coordinated assaults, which took place on April 25, struck several locations and resulted in multiple casualties, including high-ranking military officials.

Mali’s Defence Minister, Sadio Camara, is among those reported dead after an explosion believed to have occurred at his residence near Bamako.

State broadcasters later confirmed his death, stating he died from injuries sustained during the attack. There are also indications that Mali’s transitional leader, Assimi Goïta, was moved to safety after his home came under threat.

In its reaction, ECOWAS described the incidents as deeply disturbing and extended sympathies to affected families while reaffirming support for Mali.

The bloc stressed that such attacks continue to endanger peace and stability across West Africa and must be met with a united front.

It urged governments, security agencies, and citizens within the region to strengthen collaboration in efforts to counter extremist violence.

Reports suggest the attacks were carried out by armed groups linked to jihadist and separatist movements, with heavy gunfire and explosions recorded in Bamako and other areas. The violence reportedly spilled into the following day as security forces attempted to regain control.

Clashes were also reported in Kati, a key military base area, as well as in Gao, Sevare, and Mopti, pointing to the scale of the coordinated operations.

Malian authorities say response efforts are ongoing, with some of the attackers reportedly retreating.

The latest violence highlights the ongoing security challenges in the Sahel, where militant activity continues to pose a major threat despite sustained military interventions.
