Sanitopia CIC, a United Kingdom-based Community Interest Company, has partnered with Healthfab, and Indian based Company, to introduce reusable period underwear as part of its efforts to improve menstrual health, comfort, and sustainability across Ghana.

Founded by Ghanaian lawyer, entrepreneur, author, and philanthropist, Mr Richard Kojo Acheampong, Sanitopia CIC is redefining community-based infrastructure through purpose-driven development.

The collaboration is expected to tackle long-standing challenges associated with traditional menstrual products, particularly discomfort, limited innovation, and environmental impact. According to both organisations, the initiative will focus on delivering modern, user-friendly solutions that reflect the everyday realities of women and girls.

For decades, conventional sanitary pads and tampons have dominated the menstrual hygiene market. However, many users continue to report issues including irritation, heat, odour, and general discomfort.

Healthfab says its patented reusable period underwear is designed to directly address these concerns. The product features a multi-layered absorbent system capable of holding up to six times more fluid than standard options, while maintaining a lightweight and breathable feel.

The underwear is made with anti-bacterial microfiber fabric to reduce the risk of rashes and infections and is engineered to be leak-proof while remaining discreet and comfortable for daily use.

Sanitopia CIC says the partnership aligns with its broader mission to improve sanitation and dignity, particularly for women and girls in underserved communities. By integrating Healthfab’s innovation into its programs, the organisation aims to expand access to safer and more comfortable menstrual solutions.

Healthfab, which reports strong market traction with a product sold every 45 seconds, says its offering has been developed with a focus on both performance and safety. The underwear features a multi-layered absorbent system, lightweight construction, and certifications indicating it is free from harmful chemicals, including PFAS.

Beyond product distribution, the partnership is expected to include awareness campaigns to challenge stigma around menstruation and promote healthier, more practical solutions.

Sanitopia’s approach is rooted in sustainability and community engagement. Its model supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Gender Equality (SDG 5), and Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6).

Operating primarily in Ghana and expanding across other African countries, Sanitopia CIC has positioned itself as a company driven not by profit but by purpose. The organisation aims to tackle one of the continent’s most persistent challenges — the lack of adequate sanitation — which continues to threaten health outcomes and educational attainment, particularly among young girls.
