President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana is on course to exit its International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme by April 2026, following steady progress under the ongoing economic recovery plan.

He made the disclosure while addressing a business engagement in Lusaka, Zambia, where he pointed to improving macroeconomic indicators as evidence of Ghana’s recovery. According to the President, gains in inflation control, foreign exchange stability and investor confidence have strengthened the country’s position ahead of the programme’s completion.

Ghana entered a three-year IMF Extended Credit Facility arrangement in May 2023 to address severe fiscal imbalances, rising inflation and debt sustainability challenges. Since then, the government has implemented a series of fiscal and structural reforms, including expenditure controls, revenue measures and public sector reforms, as part of the programme’s conditionalities.

President Mahama reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline and responsible economic management, stressing that Ghana intends to complete the IMF programme on schedule and without seeking an extension.

The IMF programme is expected to formally conclude after a final review in April 2026, subject to Ghana meeting all agreed targets and benchmarks.

The planned exit is seen as a key milestone in Ghana’s economic recovery, with government officials indicating that post-programme policies will focus on sustaining macroeconomic stability and long-term growth.
