The Los Angeles Lakers are heading into a stunning new era after Josh Kushner and Bob Iger agreed to buy the NBA giant for a reported record $12.5bn. The deal could reshape one of the biggest names in sport, just months after Mark Walter took control.
Kushner, a venture capitalist, and Iger, the former Disney chief, are set to take the controlling interest, subject to NBA approval and due diligence. Their arrival comes as the Lakers enter a major transition following LeBron James’ departure to the Philadelphia 76ers.
“As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honoured for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers,” Kushner and Iger said. They also promised a “long-term commitment” to compete at the highest level and serve the team, its fans and Los Angeles.
The price tag is staggering, but it reflects the Lakers’ unique place in global sport. Jerry Buss bought the franchise in 1979 for $67.5m, while the team now sits just one championship behind the Boston Celtics’ record 18 NBA titles.
Walter’s short spell as majority owner is also notable. He bought his stake from the Buss family for a reported $10bn in 2025, setting a new sports valuation record at the time.
Now, the spotlight turns to Iger and Kushner. Iger brings deep experience from Disney, including years of close ties with the NBA through ESPN and major broadcast agreements.
Lakers legend Magic Johnson welcomed the move, saying: “You couldn’t have two better owners.” His support adds weight to the belief that the new ownership group understands the responsibility that comes with the purple and gold.
On the court, Luka Doncic will be central to that next chapter. The Slovenian superstar arrived from Dallas in February 2025 and now carries even greater responsibility after James’ exit.
“Being a Laker means everything to me, and I’m excited to get back on the court and bring a championship to LA,” Doncic said.
