President John Dramani Mahama has encouraged Ghanaians to prioritise locally produced chicken over imported options as part of efforts to boost the country’s poultry industry and promote self-sufficiency.

Speaking at the launch of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Poultry Initiative in Kumasi on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, the President expressed concern about the low patronage of locally produced poultry products, emphasising the need for a national shift towards supporting Ghanaian farmers and producers.

“The Nkoko Nkitinkiti initiative represents more than poultry production; it embodies the spirit of renewal and self-belief,” President Mahama said. “Let’s take pride in producing what we eat and eating what we make. After processing the chicken, the branding will be done properly for markets and stores. Please buy stamped Ghana chicken and stop patronising imported chicken.”

In a related announcement, President Mahama directed the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to release an additional GHC200 million to purchase surplus maize and rice from farmers affected by the ongoing nationwide food glut.

This follows an earlier release of GHC100 million, which the President noted was insufficient to stabilise the market.

The directive comes amid mounting concerns from farmers, particularly in the maize, rice, and poultry sectors, who have faced difficulties selling their produce due to oversupply and limited storage capacity.
