Five years after the passing of Ghana’s former President Jerry John Rawlings, United Nigeria Airlines has paid tribute to his enduring legacy by naming one of its aircraft after him.
The “J.J. Rawlings” aircraft made its maiden flight from Abuja to Accra on Monday, marking the airline’s inaugural international service between Nigeria and Ghana.
The historic flight carried several dignitaries, including Ghana’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Baba Jamal; the Chairman and CEO of United Nigeria Airlines, Chief Professor Obiora Okonkwo; senior officials from Nigeria’s aviation sector; and other distinguished guests.
Upon arrival at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, a brief unveiling ceremony was held where former Minister and Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, Fritz Baffour—representing the Rawlings family—joined Chief Professor Okonkwo to reveal the aircraft’s inscription: “J.J. Rawlings… The legend lives on.”
Speaking at the ceremony held at Terminal 3, Gate C8, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, expressed gratitude to United Nigeria Airlines for honoring the memory of the late former President.
“President Rawlings once said he would rather live in the hearts of men than have his name on monuments or streets. Today, that statement has been manifested through the naming of this aircraft,” Mr. Adams said.
The event not only celebrated the life and influence of Jerry John Rawlings but also symbolized strengthened ties between Ghana and Nigeria through aviation and shared history.
