Former President John Dramani Mahama has held high-level bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, as part of his participation in the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women.

The discussions took place on the sidelines of the event and coincided with the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Ghana and China.

The talks focused on strengthening political and economic cooperation, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to deepening the longstanding partnership between the two nations.

President Xi described Ghana as a key partner in Africa and expressed China’s readiness to upgrade cooperation across a range of sectors including mining, energy, infrastructure, agriculture, and fisheries.

He emphasized the importance of implementing the outcomes of the 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), noting that both sides should work to build an “all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era.”

Xi also pledged China’s support in helping Ghana transform its natural resource wealth into sustainable development and welcomed Ghana’s expected participation in China’s expanded zero-tariff policy for African countries.

President Mahama, in response, congratulated China for successfully hosting the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women, describing the event as “of great significance” and a strong indication of China’s leadership in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment globally.

He reaffirmed Ghana’s continued support for the One-China policy and expressed optimism about expanding bilateral cooperation in critical sectors. Mahama also stressed Ghana’s commitment to multilateralism and called for reforms in global governance systems to promote equity, fairness, and justice.

The meeting underscored the mutual desire of both nations to bolster ties and pursue shared development goals, building on decades of cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and diplomacy.
