The Constitution Review Committee (CRC) has announced that it is on schedule to submit its draft report on proposed amendments to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution to President John Dramani Mahama within the coming weeks.
According to the CRC’s Secretary, Dr. Rainer Akumperigya, the committee is working diligently to finalize the document and aims to present it by late September or early October.
“We’re putting in the work to complete the draft and are confident it will be ready for submission within the set timeframe,” Dr. Akumperigya told the Daily Graphic.
The report comes after extensive consultations with a wide range of stakeholders, including the Council of State, Trades Union Congress (TUC), and other civil society bodies.
Key issues that emerged during the review process include:
- Imposing stricter term limits for the presidency
- Reducing executive powers
- Introducing popular elections for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs)
- Amending the rule that requires ministers to be appointed from Parliament
Dr. Akumperigya clarified that the submission of the draft would not signify the end of the committee’s responsibilities.
The CRC will remain available to assist Parliament with clarifications and help guide the implementation of any adopted recommendations.
