Rwanda is bidding to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix, with President Paul Kagame announcing the country’s formal interest.

F1 has expressed a desire to bring a race to Africa, and discussions with Rwanda have been ongoing for several months.

The announcement came during the FIA’s General Assembly and prize-giving ceremony in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, where Kagame officially revealed the country’s ambitions to bring the excitement of F1 racing back to Africa.

He thanked F1 President Stefano Domenicali and the entire F1 team for the progress made in their talks so far, emphasizing that Rwanda is fully committed to the project.

Kagame explained: “I am happy to formally announce that Rwanda is bidding to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix and bring the thrill of racing back to Africa.

A big thank you to Stefano Domenicali and the entire F1 team for the positive discussions thus far. We approach this opportunity with the seriousness and commitment it deserves.”

Should an agreement be reached, the race would take place on a new track near the recently constructed Bugesera Airport, just outside Kigali.

The circuit is being designed by Alexander Wurz, a former F1 driver and chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association.

Wurz’s design incorporates the area’s natural topography, including a lake and rolling hills, creating a fast and flowing layout.

Wurz’s firm has been collaborating with local advisers, companies, and authorities for over a year on the project.

Wurz is also involved in designing the Qiddiyah circuit in Saudi Arabia, which is slated for completion in 2028, with a Grand Prix planned for 2029.

Although F1 previously explored reviving the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami, talks were stalled due to issues with the local promoter.

As a result, the Rwanda project is now seen as the most promising opportunity for an African Grand Prix, though it has yet to be officially confirmed.

At the FIA General Assembly, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem met with Rwanda’s Sports Minister, Richard Nyirishema. Ben Sulayem praised Rwanda’s growing influence in motorsport, saying: “To be here in Rwanda for such an important moment in the FIA’s calendar reflects the strength of this nation. We share common values in key sectors such as innovation, sustainability, and road safety, and I look forward to continuing our partnership. The future of motorsport in Africa is bright.”
