Marcelo, one of football’s most decorated left-backs, has officially hung up his boots at the age of 36, bringing an end to an illustrious career that spanned nearly two decades. The former Real Madrid and Brazil captain announced his retirement, three months after leaving Fluminense, the club where it all began.

Marcelo’s name is very synonymous with Real Madrid’s golden era. Arriving in 2007 as a teenager from Brazil, he spent 15 years at the Santiago Bernabéu, winning 25 trophies, including five Champions League titles and six La Liga crowns.

In 2021, he made history as the first non-Spaniard since 1904 to captain Los Blancos, leading them to yet another European triumph in 2022 before departing as the club’s most decorated player.

Following his Madrid farewell, Marcelo had brief spells with Olympiacos and Fluminense, the latter culminating in a Copa Libertadores triumph a fitting final chapter for a player who redefined the modern full-back role.

Known for his attacking flair, technical brilliance, and relentless energy, he recorded 58 goals in 714 appearances across club and international football.

Though international silverware eluded him at the highest level, he did lift the Confederations Cup with Brazil in 2013. While the World Cup and Copa América proved elusive, his legacy remains untouchable.
