Ghana’s place in the World Cup knockout stage was already secured, but their final Group L outing ended in frustration. A 2-1 defeat to Croatia exposed defensive lapses and left Carlos Queiroz questioning how easily his side were punished on the biggest stage.

The match in Philadelphia began with little rhythm or urgency. Both sides appeared cautious, almost as if avoiding risk mattered more than chasing control. For long spells, it looked like a tactical stand-off rather than a World Cup clash.

Croatia eventually broke the deadlock in the 31st minute through Petar Sučić. The midfielder was left unchallenged 25 yards out and calmly drilled a low strike into the corner. Ghana’s midfield offered little resistance, allowing Croatia to dictate tempo and territory.

Before that moment, Ghana struggled to register intent in attack. They sat deep and invited pressure, a structure that limited space but also removed their own threat going forward. It was a cautious approach that frustrated fans and players alike.

The second half brought a different energy. Abdul Fatawu’s introduction added pace and direct running, and Ghana began to stretch Croatia. That shift nearly produced an equaliser when Fatawu forced a save with a dipping effort just over the bar.

Ghana finally levelled in the 73rd minute. Derrick Luckassen reacted quickest in the box to bundle home from a set-piece, and after a tense VAR check, the goal stood. For the first time in the match, belief swept through the Ghana bench and supporters.

Momentum changed immediately. Croatia were suddenly under pressure and Ghana pushed forward with confidence. But just as the Black Stars looked most dangerous, experience struck back.

In the 83rd minute, Luka Modrić delivered a precise corner into the area. Nikola Vlašić rose above the defence and powered a header past the goalkeeper. It was a moment of control and precision that Ghana could not match.

From there, Croatia closed the game with calm authority. Ghana tried to respond, but their attacks lacked clarity and final quality. The earlier hesitation to commit bodies forward came back to haunt them.

After the match, Carlos Queiroz pointed to individual errors as the deciding factor. “Croatia scored two very easy goals,” he said. “We cannot concede a goal from 40 metres at this level.”

He also praised Croatia’s influence in midfield. “Luka Modrić did well as usual as the playmaker. We tried to block his decisions, but it was difficult to control him,” he added.

Despite the defeat, Ghana progressed to the Round of 32, where they will face Colombia. The Black Stars now shift focus quickly, but this performance will serve as a warning that at this level, moments of hesitation are punished without mercy.
