In a surprise move, Leicester City striker Jordan Ayew has been appointed captain of the Black Stars for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola and Niger. Ghana coach Otto Addo made the announcement at a press conference.
Coach Addo revealed that the decision was made due to Thomas Partey’s absence, and after consulting with Kudus Mohammed. “The initiative was to make Thomas the captain to guide the team. But once he is not there, I had to speak to Kudus and I made the decision to make Jordan the captain,” Addo explained.
Addo emphasized that Kudus will still play a key leadership role as second captain, alongside Alexander Djiku. “I talked to Kudus for him to understand that I want him to grow into the role… Jordan will take over now and lead the team.”
Mohammed Kudus captained the team during the last round of qualifiers which was a double header against Sudan.
The Black Stars face Angola on November 15 in Luanda and Niger on November 18 in Accra. Ghana currently sits third in Group F with two points from four games.
