The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has named Swedish tactician Kim Lars Björkegren as the new head coach of the Black Queens, signaling a fresh start for Ghana’s women’s football. With a decorated 18-year coaching career, Björkegren brings an impressive resume and a clear vision to elevate the team on the international stage.
From winning the Swedish Damallsvenskan with Linköpings FC to clinching the Cypriot Women’s League with Apollon Ladies, the UEFA License A coach has consistently proven his ability to build winning teams. In the 2020-21 season, his exceptional work in Cyprus earned him Coach of the Season honors.
He has honed his craft across continents, from guiding Beijing BG Phoenix to a third-place finish in the Chinese Women’s FA Cup and Super Cup, to leading Racing Louisville in the highly competitive National Women’s Soccer League in the United States.
Björkegren will work alongside a revamped technical team that includes Charles Sampson and Anita Wiredu as assistant coaches. Supporting the squad are key medical staff such as Dr. Kate Boachie-Agyemang and physiotherapist Margaret Foli. Additionally, Ghana football legend Adwoa Bayor takes on a pivotal role as one of the team’s equipment officers, injecting invaluable experience into the setup.
The GFA is optimistic about the impact of Björkegren’s leadership, describing him as the “ideal choice” to guide the Black Queens to greater heights. As Ghana eyes a return to dominance in African women’s football, the Swedish coach’s expertise, combined with the talent within the team, could prove to be a winning formula.
