Ghana’s under-12 tennis team clinches gold at CAT championships

Ghana’s national under-12 boys’ tennis team made history, securing the top prize at the Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) Under-12 championships in Gaborone, Botswana.

Led by Coach Charles Abugbila, the trio of Jeff Frimpong, Ethan Delali Dzidzornu, and Eric Toto delivered outstanding performances. Ghana’s campaign began with a 2-1 win over Zimbabwe in Group A.

The team’s momentum continued with a 2-1 victory over Tunisia and a commanding 3-0 win against host nation Botswana, securing top spot in the group.

Ghana edged Cameroon 2-1 in the semifinals before facing South Africa in the final. Despite Eric Toto’s loss to Mpho Bowers, Jeff Frimpong’s win over Nicholas Van Der kept Ghana’s hopes alive.

Ethan Delali Dzidzornu and Jeff Frimpong paired up to defeat Mpho Bowers and Nicholas Van Der 7-5, 6-4, sealing Ghana’s championship victory.

Coach Abugbila on his part said :“I’m delighted we’ve achieved this. I can’t remember the last time we conquered Africa. I’m happy to lead these lads in making this historic moment.”
