Ghana Para Athletics Team Sets Sights on Glasgow 2026 with Qualification Debut in Marrakech

The Ghana Para Athletics Team has officially embarked on its journey to qualify for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, departing Kotoka International Airport for the 2025 World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Marrakech, Morocco.

The prestigious event is scheduled to take place from 22nd to 29th April 2025 at the Marrakech Sports Stadium.

This marks the team’s first qualifying event on the road to Glasgow, signaling a significant milestone in their Commonwealth Games campaign.

The four-member delegation is led by seasoned National Para Athletics Coach, Mr. Ibrahim Aminu Suleman, and features a dynamic group of athletes:

Zinabu Issah, a decorated Paralympian and double gold medallist in Women’s F57 Shot Put and Discus Throw at the 2024 Marrakech Grand Prix.

Edmund Govina, who returns to international competition after participating in the 2024 Grand Prix events in Marrakech and Paris, competing in the Men’s T31 Shot Put and Discus Throw.

Gilbert Ampiah, a rising high jump talent from St. Augustine’s College, set to undergo international classification and make his global para-athletics debut in Morocco.

The athletes prepared rigorously at the University of Ghana’s athletics warm-up field and are expected to continue final preparations in Marrakech, with early arrival allowing time for acclimatization and peak performance ahead of competition on 26th April.

During the team’s departure, Mr. Ignatius Elletey,Executive Member of Ghana Para Athletics and representative of NPC Ghana President Mr. Samson Deen delivered an inspiring send-off, urging the athletes to give their all and represent Ghana with pride.

Mr. Samson Deen, who also serves as President of the African Paralympic Committee, along with members of the NPC Ghana Board, is expected to join the team in Marrakech in the lead-up to the main events.

This trip marks a crucial step in Ghana’s broader commitment to empowering para-athletes and enhancing their presence on the global stage.
