Carlos Queiroz has wasted little time shaking up the Black Stars. In his first squad announcement as Ghana coach, the veteran Portuguese manager unveiled a bold 23-man squad packed with debutants, returning stars and home-based talent ahead of a crucial friendly against Mexico.
The match on May 22 is more than just another international friendly. It is Ghana’s final major test before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and Queiroz has made one thing clear, reputation alone will not guarantee a place on the plane.
Fifteen players have earned first-time call-ups in what feels like the beginning of a new chapter for the Black Stars. The squad also includes six players from the Ghana Premier League, a rare sign of trust in the local game after years of heavy reliance on Europe-based talent.
The absence of experienced names like Thomas Partey and Jordan Ayew immediately stands out. Rather than lean on familiar figures, Queiroz appears focused on competition, energy and long-term balance. It is a risky move, but one that could redefine Ghana’s direction ahead of the World Cup.
One of the most exciting inclusions is Prince Amoako Junior. The FC Nordsjaelland winger has been one of Ghana’s brightest young exports this season, producing eight goals and five assists with fearless attacking play in Denmark. His pace and directness could add a new edge to Ghana’s frontline.
Augustine Boakye’s rise has also earned reward. The Saint-Etienne midfielder impressed in Ligue 2 with five goals and nine assists, combining creativity with relentless work rate. His call-up reflects Queiroz’s desire for midfielders who can both create and press aggressively.
There is also a return for Majeed Ashimeru after a long injury layoff. The midfielder brings calmness and experience to a squad filled with newcomers. Felix Afena-Gyan is back too, returning for the first time since May 2025 after a difficult period away from the national team.
The local league has not been ignored. Medeama’s Salim Adams, who has scored 11 league goals this season, has earned his opportunity after months of strong performances. Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Solomon Agbasi and Heart of Lions defender Ebenezer Abban also complete a domestic core eager to prove they belong at the highest level.
Perhaps the most intriguing name is Jesurun Rak-Sakyi. The former England youth international finally gets his chance with Ghana after years of speculation over his international future. His flair, speed and unpredictability could make him one of the squad’s breakout stars.
The game against Mexico will provide a different kind of pressure. Facing one of the World Cup co-hosts in a hostile atmosphere will test not only tactics but mentality. For many of these players, this may be their only chance to convince Queiroz before he names his final World Cup squad on June 1.
