Though Viktor Kovalenko briefly restored a flicker of hope for the visitors, following up Ola Solbakken’s stinging shot to make it 1-1 on the night, Bologna never looked like losing control. Their grip tightened late on when Thijs Dallinga nodded in a second, sealing a night of celebration in Emilia-Romagna.
For head coach Italiano, it marks a fourth final in three years across different clubs, a staggering record. “It was a goal, the dream of this city and the club,” he said post-match. “We dedicate this final to the people of Bologna, who support us tremendously.”
The city has embraced this side with open arms, and with good reason. Bologna currently sit fourth in Serie A, fresh off a 1-0 win over Inter Milan, and are on course for a second consecutive Champions League qualification. The cup, meanwhile, offers a route into the Europa League, though Bologna are eyeing even loftier heights.
Their date with AC Milan is set for May 14 at the Stadio Olimpico, and Italiano is relishing the challenge. “We know we’re facing a team of champions,” he said. “But our self-esteem is sky-high. We can’t wait to get to Rome.”
