A coalition of 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who served under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration between 2017 and 2024 has thrown its full support behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections.

The endorsement was formally announced at a press conference held on Monday at the Alisa Hotel in Accra. The group, operating under the banner “Forum of Former MMDCEs for Dr. Bawumia,” described their backing as a “strong, unshaken endorsement” of the former Vice President, ahead of the NPP’s internal flagbearer elections scheduled for January 31, 2026.

In a statement, the forum emphasized that their support goes beyond symbolism. “Our endorsement is not merely symbolic; it is a strategic and operational commitment,” they said, highlighting plans to commit time, resources, and political expertise to ensure Dr. Bawumia secures the party’s nomination and eventual victory in the 2028 polls.

The group stated that its endorsement follows months of consultation with various aspirants and a detailed evaluation of their capabilities. “After extensive consultations and a thorough assessment, we are convinced that Dr. Bawumia stands out as the most competent and visionary leader for both the NPP and the nation,” they declared.

The former MMDCEs praised Dr. Bawumia’s public service record, particularly his role in Ghana’s digital transformation, citing initiatives such as the Ghana Card, mobile money interoperability, and the paperless port system. These, they said, have modernised key sectors of the economy and improved governance efficiency.

Describing Dr. Bawumia as an “accessible, humble, and inclusive leader,” the group argued that his appeal across party lines, especially among youth and undecided voters, provides the NPP with a strategic advantage heading into the next national elections.

They also emphasized the value of fielding a well-known candidate. “The electoral data shows that starting with a familiar and respected figure like Dr. Bawumia gives us a significant head start, unlike the uncertainties that come with introducing a new face,” they stated.

With many forum members having served as constituency and regional executives, some for over 16 years, the group pledged to leverage their deep grassroots connections across all 16 regions to mobilize support.

“We are not just endorsing—we are activating our networks,” they said. “We will engage in door-to-door campaigns, counter misinformation with facts, and support the campaign with both fundraising and logistical coordination.”

The endorsement marks a major boost for Dr. Bawumia as the NPP begins gearing up for its next leadership contest and the road to the 2028 general elections.
