The streets of Monaco have witnessed countless Formula 1 legends, but on Sunday they belonged to a teenager. Kimi Antonelli produced a drive of remarkable maturity and speed to become the youngest Monaco Grand Prix winner in history, extending his championship lead in a race packed with drama, crashes, penalties, and heartbreak.

At just 19 years and nine months old, the Mercedes star eclipsed Lewis Hamilton’s long-standing record and secured a fifth consecutive victory. It was another statement performance from a driver who is rapidly turning potential into dominance.

From pole position, Antonelli never looked rattled. While rivals battled mechanical failures, penalties, and pressure, the Italian remained calm around Formula 1’s most unforgiving circuit.

“It’s been an incredible weekend, an incredible race,” Antonelli said after the chequered flag. “It was one of those days where we had incredible pace and it was just coming all so naturally. The car was feeling incredible and it was just giving me the confidence to push, so it was a very enjoyable day.”

His confidence was evident from the opening seconds. As the lights went out, Antonelli launched perfectly while Max Verstappen’s race collapsed almost immediately due to technical problems. The Dutchman became the first retirement of the afternoon, ending any hopes of challenging for victory.

Behind Antonelli, Ferrari briefly looked capable of mounting a challenge. Hamilton and Charles Leclerc both moved ahead of Verstappen and settled into second and third. Yet neither could match the relentless pace of the Mercedes youngster, who steadily built a lead of more than 20 seconds.

The race appeared under control until Monaco delivered its usual dose of unpredictability. Lance Stroll crashed at the final corner, bringing out a Safety Car that wiped away Antonelli’s huge advantage.

Moments later, local hero Leclerc suffered an almost identical accident. Concerns over damage to the track surface forced race officials to red-flag the event, creating a lengthy stoppage and setting up a dramatic late restart.

For many drivers, the interruption changed everything. For Antonelli, it changed nothing.

When racing resumed with just eight laps remaining, the young Italian nailed a second standing start and immediately shut the door on Hamilton. The Ferrari veteran chased hard but never looked close enough to attack.

Hamilton’s second-place finish moved him above Mercedes team-mate George Russell in the championship standings. Russell endured another miserable weekend, collecting penalties and finishing outside the points after a late drive-through punishment.

Elsewhere, Monaco delivered surprise stories. Isack Hadjar secured a maiden Formula 1 podium, although a post-race investigation left questions hanging over his result. Racing Bulls also enjoyed one of their strongest weekends in years as Liam Lawson finished fifth and rookie Arvid Lindblad claimed a career-best sixth.

The race also proved costly for several contenders. Reigning world champion Lando Norris retired with engine trouble, while Leclerc, Carlos Sainz, Stroll, Valtteri Bottas and Ollie Bearman all failed to reach the finish.

As the championship heads to Barcelona, the momentum is firmly with Antonelli. A 66-point advantage after only six rounds is significant, but perhaps even more impressive is the manner in which he is winning.

Monaco often reveals a driver’s true quality. On one of Formula 1’s grandest stages, Antonelli looked every inch a future world champion.
