On The AM Club with Miriam Mensah and Kojo Daasebere, A tech content creator, Mr. Morfix and Nana Yaw, A tech and crypto influencer, discussed how Artificial Intelligence helps to tackle fake news on social media platforms.

How Does AI Help To Detect Fake News on Social Media?

Mr. Morfix and Nana Yaw shared some interesting ways AI helps to detect fake news on social media:

  • Pattern Recognition and Flagging AI detects patterns in information, such as suspicious trends, and flags them to reduce the spread of fake news.
  • Using Fact checking tools – Fact checking tools like Facebook Fact-Checkers and News Guard can be used to access content credibility.
  • X (formerly Twitter) Community Notes The Community Notes feature acts as a fact-checking tool to curb the spread of false information.

What’s The Limitation?

Mr. Morfix and Nana Yaw explained that while AI is a powerful tool, there are risks and limitations to its effectiveness in curbing fake news.

  • Language Barrier AI struggles to understand local dialects, making it difficult to detect misinformation written in that way.
  • Frequency of Updates – Without frequent updates, AI may rely on outdated data, making it less reliable.
  • Verification Badge These badges indicate a source’s credibility, but it’s important to verify interactions before accepting the post as credible.

How To Take Down Fake Information

Mr. Morfix and Nana Yaw also gave us some good tips to help pull down fake information from social media. These are the tips:

  • Reporting Fake InformationMost social media platforms have a reporting feature that flags the content for review.
  • Appealing for Authentic Content Posts with authentic information falsely reported can be resolved by submitting an appeal for cross-checking and reinstatement if verified as accurate.

This ensures that fake content is removed while protecting genuine posts from being unfairly taken down.

Bottom line: It is very important for the government to use strict regulations to control content on social media.
