Ugandan police have banned the ongoing mobilization tours by National Unity Platform president, Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine. Deputy Inspector General of Police, Major-General Geoffrey Katsigazi Tumusiime said Wine and his NUP supporters have disregarded a number of guidelines provided to them.
Police have warned Wine that his rallies were vulnerable to terror attacks, as the rallies take place in open spaces that are difficult to manage.
They also allege that during mobilization activities in Luweero, Wine used one of the rallies to “incite violence, promote sectarianism, and made calls for the removal of an elected government, issuing defamatory statements against President Yoweri Museveni.
Wine has disputed the police allegations, saying security was using the bomb threat to curtail the party’s tours.
Wine, was the main opponent of President Yoweri Museveni of the National Resistance Movement in the January 14, 2021 general elections.
He faced many obstacles during his campaign trail, including intimidation, arrest, and the banning of his campaign meetings.
Wine has also been vocal on the anti-gay laws that were passed by parliament and the president’s defiance at the World Bank’s decision not to grant Uganda any new loans because of the laws.
