As calls for an end to illegal mining heighten in Ghana, Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi and the Works and Housing Minister,  Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has firmly stated that his constituency will not permit mining activities in their waterbodies.

His stance follows the growing concerns about the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining, particularly to water resources.

According to the him, some of his colleagues in Parliament may hesitate to tackle illegal mining due to fear of losing voter support. Mr Oppong Nkrumah highlighted his unwavering commitment to protecting the natural resources in Ofoase Ayirebi, despite the political pressures surrounding the issue.

Speaking with some constituents on Saturday, he emphasized that environmental preservation should take precedence over political interests and the pursuit of votes.

“Today, some say that those mining in waterbodies should be left to do so because if we ask them to stop, they won’t vote for us. I want to emphatically say that if an MP wants to allow people to mine on his waterbodies, we won’t allow people to mine on waterbodies here in Ofoase Ayirebi because the water is what we drink,” he noted.

The minster also highlighted his financial contribution to support anti-mining raids, revealing that he contributes approximately GH¢7000 for each operation.

“Whenever they are going for a raid, they take about GH¢7000 from me before they do so. So, if someone somewhere is afraid to fight persons destroying our waterbodies, we in Ofoase Ayirebi won’t allow that here,” he asserted.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah urged persons interested in mining to follow legal and environmental practices.

“If you want to mine, there is a good way to go about it,” he said.
