The University of Cape Coast community is in a state of mourning following the tragic death of a Level 200 student who was reported missing earlier last week and was later found dead along the Cape Coast shoreline.
Twenty-two-year-old Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a Bachelor of Commerce student specialising in Human Resource Management, was reported missing after she left her hostel on the university campus on the evening of June 11 and did not return.
According to information released by the university’s management, Innocentia was residing at the Ayensu Plaza. Her roommate told investigators that at about 7 p.m, Innocentia received a phone call, dressed casually and left their room and since did not return. After repeated attempts to reach her proved unsuccessful, concerned friends and family launched a search for the missing student.
Two days later, residents near Duakor reported the discovery of a body that had washed ashore at Hutchland beach. Police officers retrieved the body for identification and further investigations.
The deceased was later identified by her relatives and roommate as Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.
Her body has since been moved at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the University of Cape Coast community, with students expressing grief and calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing. The Ministry of Education has extended its condolences to the bereaved family and the university community. The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu has also directed the university to collaborate with security agencies to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohonu has deployed a team of investigators to support efforts to uncover the circumstances leading to her untimely death.
As family, friends and colleagues await answers, many are hoping that the ongoing investigation will provide clarity and justice for Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, whose life was cut short under circumstances that remain unclear.
