President Akufo-Addo has commissioned the state-of-the-art Jamestown Fishing Harbour, a project aimed at transforming Ghana’s fishing industry and reducing the country’s reliance on imported fish.
This port was a promise to the people of James Town during his campaign for the presidency in 2016.
The fishing harbour which has been commissioned is a significant initiative designed to enhance Ghana’s fishing industry and has been designed through collaborative efforts of the Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority, representing the Ministry of Transport, CRCC Harbour and Channel Engineering Bureau Group Co Ltd Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture development and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly with Grand aid from the Peoples Republic of China.
The modern facility, which includes a cold storage unit, a fish processing center, a fire and police station and a crèche, is expected to create around 4,000 direct and indirect jobs for young people in the Ga community, thereby empowering the local economy.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, President Akufo-Addo noted that the harbour will significantly improve fish catches, minimize post-harvest losses, and have a positive impact on the economy.
“It will create jobs, empower the economy and revitalise the lives of the fisherfolk and traders of Jamestown. We will inject new energies into the heart of this community. I have no doubt that its benefits will ripple across the nation,” he noted.
The President emphasized that the harbour is a testament to his administration’s commitment to investing in critical infrastructure to drive economic growth and improve the lives of Ghanaians.
He assured the fishing community that his government will continue to support the industry through initiatives such as this to ensure its sustainability and growth.
The Jamestown Fishing Harbour is expected to become a hub for fishing activities in the region, attracting investors and generating revenue for the local economy. The facility’s cold storage unit and fish processing center will enable fishermen to store and process their catch, reducing waste and increasing their earnings.
